Hello Brianne,
Carol
My family and I do a lot of things to try to reduce our footprint. We choose to live in a neighbourhood where public transportation is available and things are easily accessible by foot.
We recycle everything we can, paper, glass, tin foil, metal, hard plastic and we have a compost in our yard for food scraps, yardwaste and newspaper.
In our home we also turn off lights when we leave a room, use cold water to wash our clothes, hang things on a clothes line to dry. We're not afraid to buy things second hand so that we can reuse those things and not see them end up in a landfill. We also pack lunches in containers, rather than use plastic bags. We try to use very few chemicals in our home, and prefer to use soap, water, baking soda, and vinegar for cleaning whenever possible. We bring bags to the store when we shop.
We get a lot of DVD, CD, video games, magazines, books from the library instead of purchasing them new.
We're always open to trying new ways to reduce our carbon footprint.
Since 1989, my wife and I have been fortunate enough to both work and live together which allows us to use only 1 vehicle and vastly reduce our carbon footprint.
We are fortunate to live here in the CRD where we have access to terrific recycling services and as such we find that we have less than one green garbage bag of garbage every 2 weeks.
When the weekend rolls around we often leave our vehicle parked at home and take advantage of Victoria's beauty and fantastic weather by putting our running shoes on and doing our errands on foot.
When we go out for a walk we make it a point to pick up some of the trash that others litter our fine city with. There are trash cans throughout the city (often at or near bus stops) so I can't understand why people still choose to throw their garbage out their car windows or carelessly drop it as they walk down the side walk.
We live in a beautiful city and to all those reading this post that do their part to help keep it as such - "Thank you."
When i was in highschool i attended workshops on global warming and the steps we neede to take to reverse the affects. Nobody really took us seriously then, which was very frustrating.
I use my resuable shopping bags when i go shopping, always use my reuseable water bottles.
We are having our first baby and pretty much everything we have purchased has been second hand items, we have maybe 12 brand new outfits in her closet and everything else is from used victoria or second hand stores.
We carpool as often as possible. Turn off lights. Unplug household items when not in use.
I am trying to encourage my boyfriend to recycle more, because when i am not looking i know he puts that can in the garbage instead of recycling it! lol
There are still little steps that we need to take to help conserve and make less waste and i can't wait to get more tips from other people.
